KEY HISTORY
Duck
Key's Botels The
present-day resort, Hawk's Cay, has undergone a number of
physical changes since its days as the Indies Inn and
Yacht Club. In 1969 Indies Inn executive director Ted
Knight believed there was a need for accommodations which
Pictured

Island. The
Keynoter reported that the Indies Inn offered
"advanced thinking in marina accommodations" when it
built twelve botel units , located a few feet from an
inland waterway. Each had two bedrooms, a large modern
kitchen and a living room fully furnished with air
conditioning and a TV. The botels, equipped with all
forms of dinnerware and cooking utensils, were instantly
ready for full operation by incoming quests. Thus Duck
Key's unique botels or yachtels got their start.

Villas Around
the same time, Indies Inn built its Marina Villas, the
first two story building one sees on the left upon
entering Duck Key Drive from US 1. As with the botels the
Marina Villas were sold off by the Indies hotel and are
now available for rent through individual owners and real
estate rental agents. (See

Day Botels? In
1998 new villas modeled after Key West "conch houses"
were built throughout the resort. The Harbor Villas which
are located by Lake Lucille have two bedrooms, a kitchen,
dining area, 1 1/2 baths or more baths, a living room ,
air conditioning ,and TV's with cable. Like the botels
above, the villas "come
equipped with dinnerware and cooking utensils,
washer/dryers, and are instantly ready for full operation
by incoming quests. " Some even have boat
dockage. With
the building of the "conch house" villas in 1998 around
the protected boat basin, Lake Lucille, and the units
popular use by boaters, it would seem that to some extent
the botel concept has been revisited. From
the comments of guests at the botels, and villas of
Hawk's Cay, the appeal seems to be family comforts and
breakfast convenience for children, access to
washer/dryer, two TVs, a refrigerator for juice boxes and
snacks, and privacy for mom and dad. The botels along the
canal and the villas units located around around Yacht
Harbor/Lake Lucille are a favorite of fishermen and boat
owners who enjoy the convenience of stepping off the
veranda onto their boat. To
date no women visitors have been heard to comment such
accommodations were chosen so as to not " lose touch with
the kitchen." Duck
