OVERVIEW
AND LOCATION
People
are drawn to Duck Key in the Florida Keys because of its
laid back atmosphere and the prospect of living life on
one of America's Caribbean islands in the sunny Florida
Keys. Residents are very welcoming. They love the
island's majestic palms, the turquoise green color of the
canals,and arched Venetian style bridges. Its proximity
to the blue of the sea, choice fishing and diving spots,
and opportunities to get close to nature are added
attractions. In addition to the ocean, the tropical
weather and allure of island living on major draws for
Duck Key residency.
The
island is 95 miles south of Miami and about a two hour
drive from Miami Airport or a 30 minute flight from Miami
to the Marathon Airport located 6 miles south of Duck
Key. It is located at Mile Marker 61, sixty-one miles
Northeast of Key West. Entry to the island is by means of
a bridge located Oceanside of the Overseas
Highway.
Duck
Key's 300 acres has more than 10 miles of water frontage
overall. A boulder breakwater protect the oceanfront
homes of Duck Key and the main channel leading to the
700' x 300' yacht harbor and the commercial Hawk's Cay
Resort Marina.

The

variety of subjects. It can also provide details and news
on a real time basis should Duck Key experience a
hurricane.
ISLAND
HISTORY AND UNIQUE COMMUNITY FEATURES
The guide tells the history of Duck Key from
Pre-Columbian times to the present. Accounts of the
island's early settlers and a salt pond economy are
provided together with much information about the growth
of Duck Key since the early 1950's when Bryan Newkirk, a
Canadian businessman, first started to development the
island. You'll find treasure tales and details about
tourist treasure found. Information on the island's
man-made waterways which flow freely from Florida's Bay
to the Ocean and the creation of five small island
connected by magnificent Venetian arched bridges is also
provided. Material on island Caribbean architecture,
beautification, place names, Zane Grey , Presidential
visitations, and other historic highlights are
presented.
COMMUNITY
Many
homes on Duck Key are situated on canals or open water
making it possible to fish, snorkel and dive , or go
boating right off the doorstep.
Convenience
stores, shops, and amenities on the island include a
salon, with facials, nail and hair services, a deli, a
real estate office, clothing boutique and custom jewelry
shop. The island has a marina store, four restaurants and
several shops on resort property available to resort
guests and the community. Residents usually get about by
car, but since the island is small and the weather is
amenable islanders may choose to bike, travel by golf
cart, walk, or boat when going to tennis, getting the
morning paper , visiting friends and neighbors, and going
to social events.
PROPERTY
ASSOCIATION
The
Duck Key Property Owners' Association was incorporated in
1971 and today has a membership of over 200 families. In
addition to speaking for the Duck Key residential
community on civic matters, the Association has an
extensive social calendar of events for its members.

association is provided through the Duck Key Property

left.
THE
CLUB AT DUCK KEY
Residents
of the Island joined together as shareholders to start
the Club at Duck Key in 1998. Construction of the Club
facilities will be completed by the fall of 2000. Located
on Center Island, the Club will offers tennis and pool
facilities and a meeting hall for community gatherings.
The Club's goal is to be a focal point for community
spirit and a gathering place for community functions.
Shareholder membership is restricted to property owners
on the residential islands.
Another
club, the Indies Club, which is part of Hawk's Cay Resort
also provides social memberships. Membership is available
to property owners of Duck Key and to owners of villas at
Hawk's Cay Village. The club offers such amenities as an
exercise room, steam and sauna facilities at the Indies
Club and access to the resort's beach and pool
facilities.
LODGING
ACCOMMODATIONS
One
of the first facilities to be built on Duck Key was a
hotel. The hotel now enlarged and named Hawk's Cay Resort
was first was known as the Indies House and later as the
Indies Inn. Accommodations are available in the Resort
Inn and in Key West style vacation villas located in
several "Villages" positioned throughout a sixty acre
resort on a commercially zoned portion of Duck Key.
Limited lodging is also available at the Duck Key Botel
and Duck Inn. Homes on the residential islands are
available for four week rentals.

The

The

locations for each, home descriptions and asking

The
hurricane hotline is meant to provide information to
absentee and snowbird home owners on the general effects
of any hurricane impacting Duck Key and the Keys. Phone
numbers, satellite links plus information of a general
nature that comes our way by phone or e-mail will be
shared on this page.

A
Community calendar for use by residents is part of the
website. Residents can e-mail dates and events for
inclusion in the calendar.

The
archives will store and make available to island
residents copies of publications, flyers, newsletters and
other news worthy items of general interest to the Duck
Key island community.

Key is a community of 350 plus home owners living on 4
residential zoned islets plus several hundred more
property owners with vacation residences and condominiums
located on commercially own islet of Indies Island. This
