In
modern communities, planners and developers often make
provision for social and recreational centers for
community residents to meet and socialize. Some 50 years
ago the original developer of Duck Key, Bryan Newkirk,
through the master deed for Duck Key made provision for
just such a community center and recreation club. Sadly,
Newkirk's vision failed and the lots platted for this
purpose were changed to residential use by subsequent
developers. In1999 residents of Duck Key joined together
to form Club Duck Key making Newkirk's vision a
reality.
Now,
Duck Key has two clubs to which individuals may join: The
Club at Duck Key, a recreation and social club for
shareholder property owners on the residential islands
and the Indies Club, a commercial club operated by Hawk's
Cay Resort.

Located on eight lots on Center Island, Duck
Key.
In
1998 residents and property owners on the Island of Duck
Key joined together as shareholders to start the Club at
Duck Key for the purpose of establishing a community
recreational center and meeting place. Shareholder
membership in the Club at Duck Key is limited to property
owners of the residential islands of Duck Key.
Construction of the Club facilities was completed in
February of 200. Located on Center Island on lots
1,2,3,4,7,8 of Block 15 between San Jose and
San Salvador Streets, the Club facility offers tennis and
pool facilities and a pavillion meeting hall for
community gatherings.
The
Club's goal is a be focal point for community spirit and
a gathering place for community functions. Shareholder
membership is restricted to property owners on the
residential islands.
The
Club venture received the support of residents and
property owners. Island's deed restrictions were amended
upon obtaining approval of a majority of the residents
and lot owners.

THE
INDIES CLUB
The
Indies Club, a commercial club operated by Hawk's Cay
Resort also offers use of its facilities for a fee to
nearby and local residents. Facilities of the Indies Club
include access to beach and pools of the Hawk's Cay and
facilities such as sauna, steam and weight
rooms
In
the early 1960s, the purchase of residential land on Duck
Key automatically entitled the owner to the use of resort "club" facilities of the Indies Club. Property ownership
on Duck Key no longer automatically entitles the owner to
the use of resort "club" facilities of the Indies Club.
Fee membership in the Indies Club is available to all who
apply and are accepted by resort ownership. Property
ownership on the residential islands of Duck Key is not a
requirement.
Villa
owners at Hawk's Cay Village are entitled to free Indies
Club membership providing their villa unit is available
for rental through the resort's rental management program. Yearly Membership in the Hawk's
Cay Indies Club was $5000 in 2007.
