Over a period of 13
days in March, Duck Key experienced a bomb scare and
21 incident including theft, suspicious person
reports, medical assistance calls, driving
infractions, and an accident and
intoxication.
The Monroe County
Sheriff's Department has its own website which

Key residents heard rumors about a bomb scare on Duck

Suspicious
device destroyed at Hawk's Cay
Hawk's Cay -
Sheriff's deputies, detectives and the Sheriff's
Office Bomb Squad spent hours at Hawk's Cay
employee housing today after a suspicious device
resembling a pipe bomb was found outside a man's
apartment door.
The device was
disrupted without incident by the Bomb Squad and
detectives say it may have been someone's idea of a
joke. If it was meant as a joke, it's still a third
degree felony crime to plant a hoax bomb and the
Sheriff's Office is taking it very seriously.
"This incident took
a significant amount of man hours and also
inconvenienced a large number of people, including
employees who lived in the apartments where the
device was found, and some people staying at Hawk's
Cay Resort, who weren't allowed to return to their
residences. Even if it was a hoax device, we aren't
laughing," said Sheriff Rick Roth.
Detectives and
deputies are investigating the case to try and find
out who may have left the brown cylindrical item
full of a blue colored liquid outside the man's
apartment. The device reportedly had something
resembling a fuse protruding out of it, and had
some type of line attached to the man's door.
