Temporary Tower taken
down March 9, 2004
A
temporary tower was erected on Hawk's Cay property on
Duck Key in late February, 2004. A permit for the
tower was issued by Monroe County Growth Management
with the understanding that the tower be taken down by
March 10, 2004. The tower was erected as part of a
NexTel Convention at Hawk's Cay Resort.
Visual
Pollution for the sake of Commerce and
Communications
It
seems communication towers have become a way of life.
Is the convenience of cell phones worth it , or do you
"see" such towers as a blemish on the beauty of the
Keys? Thankfully the tower was temporary and has been
taken down. Just the same it had an impact on our
lives.
Looking
southwest from my verandah toward the setting sun and
emerging stars, the view of that unsightly tower from
February 23 to March 9 served as a reminder to me of
how commerce affects the and intrudes on the quality
of our lives.
There
has been talk of placing side walks and bike lanes
along some streets on residential Duck Key. Is there
truly a need for walks and bike lanes? Do residents
desire these things or are they meant to satisfy the
needs of commercially zoned Indies?
For
the sake of commerce and a convention group, Monroe
County issued Hawk's Cay a permit for the temporary
tower.
People
love their cell phones, and complain about poor
reception from time to time, but few residents wants
to see a cell tower erected on Duck Key. Cell towers
like billboard signs for many people represent a form
of visual pollution on the scenic landscape of the
Florida Keys. Grassy Key has several towers and there
are multiple towers in Marathon and along the Overseas
Highway. This writer sees them as ugly.
Would
you want to look at a permanent cell tower on
beautiful Duck Key? How do you feel about temporary
towers? How do you feel about sidewalks and bike paths
for the sake of commerce?
For
your sake why not write or tell someone. Start with
your Commissioners.
